About Aurora Watch Global
Aurora Watch Global is a free iOS app that tracks both the Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis using NOAA’s OVATION aurora model, with real-time KP index, solar wind data from NOAA SWPC, local cloud cover, and customizable push notifications — completely ad-free, with optional Pro for widgets and Live Activity.
Aurora Watch Global is built for aurora chasers, photographers, and curious sky watchers in both hemispheres. Whether you are checking whether the Aurora Australis might appear over Tasmania, or whether a geomagnetic storm could push the Northern Lights over Iceland, the app combines global space-weather inputs with your local weather so you can decide when it is worth heading outside.
The app launched on iOS and is developed independently. Core forecasts, maps, KP index, solar wind charts, and NOAA solar imagery are free. Optional Aurora Watch Global Pro adds Home Screen widgets, Live Activity, Aurora Now alerts, deeper NOAA history charts, and premium themes.
What data powers the app?
Aurora forecasts use NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) products, including the OVATION aurora model and near-real-time solar wind measurements from spacecraft at the L1 point (such as DSCOVR). Local cloud cover and conditions use Apple WeatherKit where available. NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) imagery powers the Solar tab. See our data sources page for full attribution and links.
Platforms
Aurora Watch Global is available on iPhone and iPad through the App Store. An Apple Watch companion is planned.
